Regarding the May 1 HHS Report on Youth Gender-Affirming Care
May 2, 2025
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a 400-page document reviewing gender-affirming care for youth. This document is the latest in a series of actions under the current administration that undermine the rights and well-being of Transgender individuals, particularly minors.
As of this statement’s release, the White House has not disclosed who authored or reviewed the report. The document contradicts decades of peer-reviewed research and medical consensus upheld by the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and other leading authorities. Instead, it presents unsubstantiated claims that misrepresent established science in an apparent attempt to justify the restriction of medically necessary care for T+ youth.
Trans Equity Coalition affirms that this document is harmful. It is part of a broader pattern of disinformation that puts Trans lives at risk. Denying access to gender-affirming care worsens mental health outcomes and increases the risk of suicide. These are not abstract statistics or political opinions—these are real lives.
We will not be erased. The existence of Transgender and Nonbinary people is not theoretical. It is reality. We have always been here, and we will always be here.
We urge our communities and allies to stay informed using reputable, evidence-based sources. Support the organizations working daily to protect the rights of gender diverse people. Speak out against misinformation when you see it. Show up for Trans youth and their families. The time of complicit silence is over. The time for solidarity and collective action is now.
Trans Equity Coalition remains unwavering in our mission: to expand and protect access to gender-affirming care and to advocate for dignity, safety, and equity for all Transgender people.
Yours in unity,
Nathan Rodriguez
