Trans Equity Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit New Jersey state-wide organization led exclusively by transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people.

This week, the House Appropriations Committee released a spending bill for labor, health and human services, education, and related agencies. Among its provisions is language that would prohibit taxpayer dollars from being used for any form of gender-affirming care—including programs under Medicaid and Medicare—regardless of age. If enacted, these provisions would strip coverage for lifesaving medical, psychological, and social resources for transgender people nationwide.
At Trans Equity Coalition, we are alarmed and deeply concerned—and we know you are, too. GenderaƯirming care is medically recognized, evidence-based, and lifesaving. To remove access not only undermines the health and dignity of transgender people, but also endangers lives by cutting our essential services for youth, adults, and elders alike.
Allow us to make ourselves very clear: we will not stand for this.
This is not the first attempt to erase transgender people from public life, and we know it will not be the last. These measures are meant to send a devastating message—that transgender people are unworthy of care, compassion, or equality. We reject that message in its entirety.
And while TEC is fighting back through our work, we need your help.
Decisions like this are not abstract—they are made by lawmakers. Every member of Congress needs to hear clearly from their constituents that these cuts are unacceptable. Phone calls, emails, and letters do make a difference, especially in high volumes. Elected officials are reminded that their constituents are watching, and that we the people have power.
As a reminder, all 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are absolutely prohibited from participating in or intervening in any political campaign. TEC cannot endorse candidates or parties. But you can. Your individual voice is powerful, and when raised alongside others, it cannot be ignored. Contacting your representatives is not about partisanship—it’s about making your voice heard in the democratic process. Trans lives depend on it.
Here are what some of the major harmful items included in the proposed appropriations / related executive/regulatory moves are. Knowing these helps us understand what’s at stake—and what to push back on.
Here are steps you can take right now:
Call or Email Your Representatives: Find your U.S. Representative and Senators at www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative and www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm.
Introduce yourself as a constituent.
State clearly that you oppose any provision that defunds or bans gender-affirming care.
Share (if you feel safe) why this issue matters to you or your loved ones.
Spread the Word: Encourage friends, family, and community members to also contact their representatives. Numbers matter—collective voices create real pressure.
Support Trans-Led Work: Volunteer, donate, or partner with organizations providing direct aid and advocacy, including TEC and our national allies.
Provide Care in Community: Check in with trans friends, family, and neighbors. Community care is a form of resistance—and it saves lives.
These proposals are a painful reminder of how vulnerable our protections remain. But we are not powerless. It doesn’t matter if you’re Trans or not. This is about human rights. We must stand together, raise our voices, and resist these attacks to affirm the dignity, health, and freedom of all our people.
TEC continues to be a strong community leader improving the quality of life for T+ people across the state of NJ, but we can't do it without your support.
That's why we've joined forces with Garden State Equality for their 2025 Equality in Motion fundraiser!
Every dollar raised by our team is put directly into the hands of Trans and Nonbinary people, and funneled right back into the community for maximum impact. Help us on our mission by donating any amount to team TEC and help us fund what NJ can be for gender diverse people now and in the future.
Don't forget that you can also join us in person! We hope to see you there!

Regarding the May 1 HHS Report on Youth Gender-Affirming Care
May 2, 2025
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a 400-page document reviewing gender-affirming care for youth. This document is the latest in a series of actions under the current administration that undermine the rights and well-being of Transgender individuals, particularly minors.
As of this statement’s release, the White House has not disclosed who authored or reviewed the report. The document contradicts decades of peer-reviewed research and medical consensus upheld by the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and other leading authorities. Instead, it presents unsubstantiated claims that misrepresent established science in an apparent attempt to justify the restriction of medically necessary care for T+ youth.
Trans Equity Coalition affirms that this document is harmful. It is part of a broader pattern of disinformation that puts Trans lives at risk. Denying access to gender-affirming care worsens mental health outcomes and increases the risk of suicide. These are not abstract statistics or political opinions—these are real lives.
We will not be erased. The existence of Transgender and Nonbinary people is not theoretical. It is reality. We have always been here, and we will always be here.
We urge our communities and allies to stay informed using reputable, evidence-based sources. Support the organizations working daily to protect the rights of gender diverse people. Speak out against misinformation when you see it. Show up for Trans youth and their families. The time of complicit silence is over. The time for solidarity and collective action is now.
Trans Equity Coalition remains unwavering in our mission: to expand and protect access to gender-affirming care and to advocate for dignity, safety, and equity for all Transgender people.
Yours in unity,
Nathan Rodriguez
